Unheeded Warnings

With a scream of surprise and fear, Gisella ran.

She pushed through the damp curtains of material, thrust aside creepers and roots that hung down from the high roof. In seconds, she had no idea where she was any more. But she kept going. There must be more than one way out of the chamber, surely?

Through more of the clammy veils. She could hear the loud chittering close behind her. Was the Dravidian calling to others to help catch her? What would they do when they caught her?

Gisella barged through another of the curtains, and found herself staring at the back of a Dravidian.

It started to turn, and she rushed past it and onwards. The chittering sound was getting louder as more of the creatures joined the search.

They were getting closer all the time. Gisella glanced over her shoulder, and saw the dark shapes pressing against the material behind her. The veil starting to move, pincers slicing down. She turned back and pushed through the next curtain, tangling for a moment in the thin, damp material and thrashing to get free. Then running again.

She turned, heading off in another direction, hoping the Dravidians would keep going.

But she slammed straight into something solid and unyielding. S o m e t h i n g tall and thin that reached down towards her...

G i s e l l a hit out, t h u m p i n g at the creature holding her tight.

It g a v e a startled cry a n d let go. G i s e l l a turned to run.

'You're stronger than you look, you know,' the Doctor said. He was doubled up from where Gisella had hit him. He held up his hand. 'Pax?'

'Sorry,' she gasped. 'Pax?'

'It means peace. OK — peace?'

'Peace,' Gisella agreed. 'But we have to get out of here.'

Behind them, one of the hanging curtains twitched, then started to move aside. Spindly claws reached round it.

But Gisella saw no more, because the Doctor grabbed her hand and together they ran as fast as they could.

'Doctor, the door's back that way,' Gisella gasped.

'Not the one I came through,' he told her.

They pushed through more of the dank fabric and Gisella saw that in front of them there was indeed another door. It wasn't as big or grand as the one she'd used.

The Doctor had his sonic screwdriver out as they ran. He held it in front of him like a talisman. The end glowed blue, and the door clicked open. The Doctor let Gisella go through ahead of him, then slammed the door shut.

The sonic screwdriver whirred again. There was a shower of sparks from the gnarled opening mechanism. From the other side of the door came the sound of something hammering against it and an angry chittering...

They didn't wait to see what would happen next. The Doctor led the way quickly back along the corridor to the main airlock where they had come in.

But the simple control panel with its single control had gone.
